AIGA Boston presented a great event the other night on the future of graphic design. Of the many takeaways, the first was "Ikigai". It is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being." The word "ikigai" is usually used to indicate the source of value in one's life or the things that make one's life worthwhile. The word translated to English roughly means "thing that you live for" or "the reason for which you wake up in the morning.

The future of design hinges on this idea. Will it be a world of "good enough design" with AI-created boring sameness that hits all the checkmarks of researched human behavior, or a design world of "ikigai" where creative individuals bring their best to the team and create new and interesting experiences
